My media product is similar in many ways to other media products by trying to follow the conventions they follow, big names like NME, Vibe and Q. These conventions would be similar layouts, big central image, skyline and others which are sown on my flat plan. Another technique I used was placing the USP (unique selling point) in the bottom left corner of the magazine as the eye is always drawn to it. The kind of audience which I aimed my magazine at would be aged 13 to 20 year olds and the demographics would be for B and C1 mainly because they typically would be the age group that buys magazines which is about alternative rock.
The magazine which inspired me the most would have to be NME because of the style of the layout and also it is my favourite magazine so it would be easiest and best if I used it. What I like about NME is the unique pictures on the front of their covers; they are always something special and not just a typical picture of someone posing for the camera, so that’s what I tried to incorporate into my magazine.
The way in which my magazine follows codes and conventions of other magazines is by having similar layouts to other so it doesn’t look out of place or of putting. I made my magazine to have similar connotations as other magazines of that chosen genre, for example the central image on my magazine is wearing clothes which suggest that he is interested in the same things as the audience of the magazine would be. Also with my magazine I layed it out so that it is instantly recognisable for the viewer to tell that there is a skyline or a masthead because I placed them in similar places.
The kind of people who are represented in my magazine would be young adults who either are starting work or are still at school between the ages of 13 to 20. The kind of people who may be influenced a lot by music.
The bands in the magazine represent them by being the same age as them which means that they have someone to identify with. When they are socialising the group would be able to communicate easily about it because they are affected by the people in the some way or another. Also the double page spread I fell is directly aimed at them because often that is what they argue about so this would possibly interest them a lot.
The ideology behind my magazine tries to spark off debate especially in my double page spread because it is about an issue which should affect everyone because they have their own opinion and views.
Music Publishers association
would be the best choice for my magazine because they provide a suitable overview of the musical publishing business. They would be the best publisher because they would know exactly what to do for a magazine which is just starting out, they would be able to know how to advertise it and make it a very successful magazine.
I fell that my magazine would mainly focus on trying to educate inform and entertain, because the type of people who would read my magazine wouldn’t be interested in it if it wasn’t entertaining. The Bloomer and Katz uses and gratification theory states that the audience play an active role in the media so I wanted my magazine to be a good subject for a conversation as the audience who read my magazine would be in to alternative rock and going out and socialising with their other friends. Maslow’s hierarchy would tie into this as friendship and family not so much sexual intimacy (entirely different magazine) are mid way in the pyramid so my magazine would be good for friends to socialise about.
With my audience being young, I decided to make the language informal because of the way young people address their friends. The tone is similar to the way teenagers would have a conversation so I though that would appeal to them also. My central image is of me looking into the distance with two poles suggesting that I am lost in thought about the music magazine, but the connotations of that picture could suggest that I am wearing a mask which I could change depending on my mood, that is why I decided to call on of my articles “The many faces of a faceless fool”, sometimes I hear people say when some has upset them for some reason “that two faced blank” I got inspiration from that and decided to use two poll and place it on my chin to symbolise that I also have two faces but you could actually see them.
I have learnt a lot while producing my magazine on Photoshop. What I learnt though came from my partner on how to use Photoshop to produce realistic front covers, but what I also learnt was how to write an article from reading lots of other real articles though it was difficult to decide what mine could be about.
Having chosen magazine as my task I have learnt many different ways in which a magazine can be created and the origins of NME, but from the initial preliminary task to create a school magazine on publisher I fell that I have come a long way since then to make what I believe to be an authentic looking magazine, though I don’t really feel the same about the film task mainly due to the hatred I fell to acting like someone else.
